What Is RetroLink?

What Is RetroLink?

RetroLink is an advanced WiFi modem for Commodore computers. It bridges the 1980s to the 21st century, bringing the connected world to the beloved 8-bit computers we grew up with.

RetroLink is not just a device — it's a platform, a portal, and a community gateway. Whether you're calling a BBS, sending email, chatting with friends, or exploring the future of retro networking, RetroLink is your link to it all.

What Does RetroLink Do?

RetroLink plugs into your Commodore’s user port and with the help of a regular terminal program, gives a full-featured wireless connection to the modern internet. Here's what RetroLink can do right now:

Instant @Link Messaging

RetroLink users can send and receive messages in real time with others on the @Link network — a messaging system built specifically for vintage machines.

Send and Receive Email

RetroLink supports sending and receiving email directly from your Commodore. It works with Gmail (via app password) and includes features like address book and saved login.

BBS

Store your favorite BBS entries, auto-dial them, and connect within seconds. RetroLink acts as a Hayes compatible modem!

OLED Display + Alerts

2 built-in screens shows status, messages, and IP activity. Sound alerts notify you of new messages or connections.

OTA-Update Ready Firmware

RetroLink can receive firmware updates without needing to re-flash or disassemble anything. The modem evolves with you.

Built-in Grok 8bit AI Assistant

Ask questions, get help, or just chat with Grok — a retro-themed AI assistant that lives inside your RetroLink.

What Makes It Different?

Unlike other WiFi modems that stop at terminal emulation or plain BBS dialing, RetroLink is built as a full-featured networking platform. It supports plug-and-play setup, no hardware mods, and is built specifically for Commodore systems.

  • No soldering or firmware hacks required

  • Runs on ESP8266 based hardware

  • Custom firmware built from the ground up

  • Integrated with @Link and future chatroom services

Future Features We're Building

RetroLink is just getting started. Here are some of the features in development or on our roadmap:

@Link Group Chat

Join live chatrooms from your C64. Think IRC for Commodore, built right into your modem.

Cloud File Transfer

Upload and download files directly to/from cloud storage. No SD card swapping needed.

Expanded Email Compatibility

IMAP support for additional providers and better inbox navigation.

PETSCII-Based Web Experiences

Access a growing network of 8-bit-friendly pages and services, styled with PETSCII graphics.

RetroLink Public API

Allow developers to build apps, games, and tools that integrate with the RetroLink ecosystem.

Cross-Platform Support

RetroLink will hopefully eventually support @Link messages on other Commodore devices like the WIC64, MeatLoaf, and even non-Commodore retro systems.

Why RetroLink?

Because retro computing shouldn't be isolated. It should be connected. RetroLink brings modern communication, creativity, and collaboration to the machines that started it all.

Whether you're a hardcore sysop, a weekend BASIC coder, or a newcomer just exploring the C64 world — RetroLink was built for you.

RetroLink: Your Commodore, Connected.
